Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop's School is an independent, all gender college-preparatory school for 800 students in grades six through twelve located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. Annualized Compensation: $50,000 - $55,000

Summary Description
The Library Assistant is responsible for providing a safe and quiet study environment for the students and faculty of the Bishop's community. The Library Assistant's duties include circulation, shelf maintenance and assistance with ongoing library projects. The Library Assistant staffs the library throughout the year from 9:30am to 6:00pm.

Essential Functions and Specific Duties
  • Opens and/or closes the library building which includes setting up access to classrooms for teachers, securing the building and reporting any facilities issues.
  • Ensures a safe, neat, quiet, and welcoming library environment for all community members (including submitting facilities work requests, managing student behavior, etc.).
  • Act as contact person for parents and for other Bishop's staff (security, nurse, etc.);
  • Assist Library Director with cataloging print and digital library materials.
  • Process and/or repair library materials (print and digital) making them ready for community use.
  • Collaborate with and direct parent volunteer work on library projects and circulation desk duties.
  • Provide readers advisory and reference services to all community members.
  • Offer engaging and enriching library programs (chess, book club, board games, reading contests, etc.).
  • Circulate library materials, laptops and other equipment and track missing laptops and in-library use materials by sending notifications to students if necessary.
  • Manage the upkeep, organization, and lending of media lab equipment such as cameras, microphones, and tripods; ensure items are in working order and ready for use.
  • Provide instruction or support in media lab technologies such as podcasting, filming, or sound recording and including proper use of equipment.
  • Perform with a team approach, other duties as assigned.
An Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • High school diploma required. College degree in Library and Information Sciences Training or related field, preferred.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a library setting, preferably in a school or public library setting.
  • Experience working with adolescents, preferred.
  • Knowledge of media equipment, preferred.
  • Experience with OPAC (library catalog), strongly preferred.
  • Basic library cataloging skills and familiarity with DDC classification, a plus.
  • Experience providing instruction or support in media lab technologies such as podcasting, filming, or sound recording, a plus.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Google Workspace and aptitude for learning new technology.
