The NAVIGATE program at M Physicians is affiliated with the University of Minnesota Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, a leader in first episode psychosis care and research. The NAVIGATE program started in 2017 with the support of grant funds from the Minnesota Department of Human Services. NAVIGATE is an evidence-based coordinated specialty care program to treat first episode psychosis in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. This interdisciplinary team-based approach is resiliency- and recovery-focused. Team members work with individuals ages 15 to 40 years old, and their natural support persons, to help them understand their illness and develop skills that help them get back on track and live rich and meaningful lives. NAVIGATE involves a number of different interventions including medication management, individual resiliency training (IRT), help getting back to work or school (Supported Employment and Education or SEE), peer support, case management and care coordination, and family support and education. NAVIGATE team members are highly skilled at providing both clinical and non-clinical support and services to individuals and families impacted by a first episode of psychosis, whether that be in the clinic, community, or an individual's home. Team members are highly collaborative, attend weekly team meetings to discuss patient care, and receive one-to-one supervision from the program’s director. The Supported Education and Employment Specialist (SEE) works directly in the community to find suitable employers and potential employers, works with educational personnel to provide training or educational opportunities, develops individualized placements, helps clients request reasonable accommodations, supports recovery goals related to education and employment using the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model, provides in vivo training for interviewing, resume writing, job applications, assists with on the job training/job coaching, supports individuals with ongoing work-related problem solving, coping with symptoms or cognitive difficulties, and coaching on social skills. The role requires participation in SEE training, supervision, consultation calls, and weekly team meetings. Requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree or related experience, experience as a supported education or employment specialist or vocational specialist, online and computer skills, driver’s license, coaching skills, problem solving and dispute resolution skills, and availability beyond traditional office hours for community work including home visits.
