Job Overview: We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Biologist to lead environmental and ecological projects, conduct field assessments, and provide expert guidance on environmental compliance and conservation strategies. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biology, environmental science, or a related field, with experience in ecological restoration, regulatory permitting, and project management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage environmental and ecological projects, including habitat assessments, species surveys, and restoration initiatives.
  • Conduct field studies to assess environmental conditions, flora, and fauna, and develop conservation strategies.
  • Prepare technical reports, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations and permitting requirements.
  • Collaborate with clients, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders to develop and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior biologists and field teams.
  • Develop and review ecological restoration plans, mitigation strategies, and monitor programs.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, environmental policies, and best practices in environmental management.
  • Regulatory & Compliance Work: Frequent collaboration with Guam EPA, Department of Agriculture, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service on environmental policies.
  • Engagement with Local Communities: May involve outreach programs, public consultations, and working with Chamorro cultural and environmental organizations.
  • Project Coordination: Interfacing with military installations (e.g., Joint Region Marianas) for environmental compliance on DoD lands.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in environmental consulting, ecological restoration, or related areas.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, including the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and other relevant local legislation.
  • Experience conducting biological surveys, impact assessments, and habitat restoration projects.
  • Proficiency in GIS mapping, data analysis, and environmental monitoring techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare detailed reports and presentations.
  • Strong leadership and project management abilities, with experience overseeing field teams and coordinating multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and travel as needed for fieldwork.

Skills:

  • Ability to conduct field surveys, habitat assessments, and impact evaluations.
  • Experience identifying plant and animal species and monitoring biodiversity.
  • Knowledge of restoration techniques, reforestation, and conservation strategies.
  • Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for mapping and data analysis.
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and interpret ecological data.
  • Familiarity with environmental sampling techniques and water/soil quality analysis.
  • Ability to work with government agencies, clients, contractors, and community groups.

Supervisory Responsibility

This role carries a responsibility to supervise and lead junior Biologists and field employees.

Outdoor/Indoor Work Environment

  • Tropical Climate: High temperatures (typically 77–88&degree;F) with high humidity levels.
  • Heavy Rainfall & Wet Season: Frequent rain showers, particularly from July to November during the wet season, with the possibility of typhoons.
  • Diverse Ecosystems: Work in coastal zones, limestone forests, wetlands, savannas, and coral reef environments.
  • Challenging Terrain: Fieldwork may require hiking through dense jungle, steep cliffs, or rough limestone terrain.
  • Wildlife & Insects: Exposure to mosquitoes, monitor lizards, feral pigs, and other local species while conducting surveys.
  • Marine & Coastal Work: Possible work in mangrove areas, estuaries, and intertidal zones, requiring wading through water or working on boats.
  • Sun Exposure & Heat Stress Risks: The need for protective clothing, hydration, and sun protection due to prolonged exposure to the sun.
  • Indoor, air-conditioned workspace for report writing, data analysis, and project coordination.

Physical Demands

This position involves physically demanding fieldwork in hot, humid, and rainy conditions, requiring hiking through rugged terrain, carrying equipment (20–50 lbs), and working in coastal and marine environments. The job may include wading through water, driving 4WD vehicles to remote sites, and prolonged sun exposure, with potential encounters with wildlife, insects, and rough vegetation. Office work involves report writing, data analysis, and meetings, requiring extended computer use and desk time. Field schedules may vary due to weather conditions, tropical storms, or project needs, demanding adaptability and physical endurance.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, salaried position. The standard hours of operation are Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. However, in alignment with operational requirements, the role may occasionally require flexibility, including working outside of regular business hours.

Travel

There is no travel required for this position at present; however, travel may be required in the future based on business needs.
