Work Schedule: Schedule (varies) but the typical schedule is Monday - Friday but may include some nights, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.

NATURE OF WORK
The Parks Maintenance Technician II will work with a team of other Parks, Recreation & Culture employees. This is the intermediate-level class in the Parks Maintenance Technician series. As a member of the Parks Division, the Parks Maintenance Technician II performs semi-skilled and skilled tasks in all phases of parks, cemetery, open space, trails, and sports field maintenance. Duties include but are not limited to, grounds, sports fields and sports complexes right of way, facility maintenance, facility, and landscape construction, irrigation, special event, and facility rental support, cleaning shelters, restrooms, and hardscapes, mowing and hand-picking trash in all areas with focus on highly visible areas like public entrances to parks and facilities, parking lots, landscape areas adjacent to buildings. This position also performs event support services and snow and ice control/removal duties for Town buildings, parking lots, trails, and parks.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Individuals work in conjunction with park maintenance technicians all of whom are under the direct supervision of the Parks Supervisor to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles, and projects in both routine and complex circumstances.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
No direct supervisory control exercised; may train lower-level Parks Maintenance Technicians.

Essential Job Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The individual in the Parks Maintenance Technician II role is assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles, and requirements as determined by the Town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulations and practices. Individuals in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties with or without reasonable accommodations.

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:

  • Maintains parks, cemetery, trails, and open spaces as assigned including planting trees and shrubs; maintaining irrigation systems; mowing and trimming lawns, shrubs, and trees; weed control; raking leaves; litter removal; and excavating holes for grave sites.
  • Assists in disease and pest control and horticulture as requested or needed.
  • Aerates, eradicates weeds, and removes plants as needed or requested. Reports the necessity for replacements as observed.
  • Assists with installation, maintenance, and repairs (including painting) of park shelters, restrooms, picnic tables, benches, bleachers, and trash receptacles as well as scoreboards, soccer goals, park signs, other park structures, and irrigation/sprinkler systems.
  • Assists with maintenance and repairs on sprinkler irrigation systems; installs or assists in installation of new sprinkler systems.
  • Safely operates construction and maintenance equipment such as pickup trucks, dump trucks, tractors, water trailers, riding mowers, hand mowers, front loaders, backhoes, tillers, aerators, snow blowers, sprayers, spreaders, weed trimmers, pruning tools, trenchers, grinders and hand-held tools for the appropriate projects.
  • Plows, shovels, and removes snow to provide useable citizen areas during inclement weather, using a snow blower, shovel, hand tools, etc.
  • Performs related duties as established by law/ ordinance or reasonably directed by the Town.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to maintenance, construction, and inspection of parks systems (parks, cemetery, open spaces, etc.).
  • Maintains operations resources and equipment in regard to inventory control and resource allocation. Ensures equipment is maintained per fleet policy.
  • Completes and submits daily work reports, work orders, and payroll timesheets in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Assists in preparations and setup for Town-wide and department special events which may require flexed scheduling and working on holidays.
  • Accepts new work assignments and schedules work hours to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Cooperates with co-workers, supervisor and other departments to foster the spirit of a team environment.
  • Communicates ideas clearly and respectfully in order to improve processes.
  • Understands written and verbal assignments, and asks questions if needed.
  • Keeps supervisor apprised of issues and concerns within the organization.
  • Accepts constructive input and implements suggestions for improvement.
  • Applies chemicals, fertilizers, and other hazardous materials following all safety precautions.
  • Promotes a culture of safety in the workplace and reports safety hazards when observed.
  • Provide courteous customer service; respond to questions and inquiries from the general public.
  • Participate in a wide variety of assigned maintenance duties on parks and facilities including repair and installation of irrigation sprinkler heads, lines, and controllers.
  • Perform equipment repair, adjustments, and lubrication. Participate in the construction, maintenance and renovation of town park's facilities.
  • Clean shelters and restrooms as needed and perform plumbing repairs as needed.
  • Plant and maintain shrubs, flowers, turf, and landscaped areas.
  • Maintain grounds for municipal buildings and parking lots.
  • Work alone or as a member of a crew. Assist in snow removal operations.
  • Accept "on-call" assignments as needed.
OTHER DUTIES:
Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:
  • The Parks Maintenance Technician II position is part of the snow removal program which includes scheduled on-call responsibilities typically during the months of October to April. Parks Maintenance Technician II's are required to review and acknowledge the Snow Guidelines annually.
  • The Parks Maintenance Technician II position participates in the Shared Fleet Vehicle Program, which requires an annual motor vehicle record check.
  • May be involved in special projects that are directly or indirectly related to essential job functions.
  • Continues educational and certification requirements in order to remain abreast of current methods and procedures.
  • Assisting other departments/divisions as necessary.

Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Parks Maintenance Technician I for the Town of Windsor; or
  • Three (3) years of previous ground maintenance experience
  • Three (3) years of experience driving a truck, tractor or dump truck
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:
  • Must have and maintain a current Colorado Class B Commercial Driver's License and tank endorsement, that meets the Town of Windsor's standards, or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment
  • Must possess and maintain a Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certification
  • Must possess at least one of the following (obtain within one year of hire):
    • Certified Landscape Technician (preferred)
    • Pesticide Applicators License
    • Certified Playground Safety Inspector
  • CPR/1st Aid certification within three (3) months of employment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
In addition to the knowledge and abilities requirements for the Park Maintenance Technician I:
  • Advanced knowledge or ability to learn parks, trails, and open space maintenance.
  • Advanced knowledge of turf and irrigation management
  • Advanced ability to read, analyze, and interpret irrigation schematics/As-Builts.
  • Knowledge of safe operating procedures for heavy equipment, machines, tools, and toxic agents
  • Ability to learn the methods, practices, and procedures of park maintenance, landscape maintenance, and general maintenance of Town facilities
  • Good working knowledge of Town policies and procedures
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written requests and work assignments
  • Ability to understand and respond appropriately to verbal directions
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the public
  • Ability to perform required duties in varied and extreme weather conditions
  • Ability to learn industry standards and implement them into the daily completion of projects
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in handling and applying pesticides
  • Basic computer skills to complete forms and paperwork and to use e-mail
  • Ability to complete daily activities within the assigned timeframe
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position with minimal direct supervision
  • Ability to successfully pass the Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated physical examination as required, and the controlled substance/alcohol tests on a random basis

  2. Materials : Position requires the use of cleaning and lubricating chemicals, pesticides or herbicides.
