Job Description

The Library Assistant performs independently while maintaining production standards. Responsibilities include providing workflow recommendations and troubleshooting performance issues for management. Support at a reference desk with scientific and technical resource knowledge, managing bibliographic verification, acquisition support, cataloging, and troubleshooting discrepancies in these areas. Additional duties involve Sequence Help Desk support, including compliance checks with USPTO sequence rules, quality control of sequence listings, physical collection maintenance, interlibrary loan processing, and ensuring correct document fulfillment for requests.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the required customer clearance for access to systems, facilities, equipment and property.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Works independently while maintaining production standards in a variety of settings.
  • Provides management with workflow recommendations and assists with troubleshooting performances/standards issues.
  • Provides reference desk support requiring knowledge of a variety of scientific and technical resources and on-line cataloging systems such as Horizon; verifies bibliographic information for customers. Troubleshoots work and resolves discrepancies as required.
  • Provides Sequence Help Desk support requiring basic knowledge of patent applications and patent prosecution as well as the USPTO sequence rules (37 CFR 1.821 - 1.825).
  • Provides acquisition support, verifies bibliographic information and formats, places orders using an internal database, provides support such as copy cataloging and editing existing MARC records. Troubleshoots work and resolves discrepancies as required.
  • Verifies links of electronic resources, conducts physical collection maintenance and checks in serials in various formats. Troubleshoots work and resolves discrepancies as required.
  • Provides interlibrary loan and reference fulfillment support by performing a quality check of completed work (correct document obtained for requester); applies troubleshooting skills to research more difficult requests for resolution and processes and forwards documents via electronic means (e.g. email). Troubleshoots work and resolves discrepancies as required.
  • Reviews Raw Sequence Listing reports for compliance with the USPTO sequence rules (37 CFR 1.821 - 1.825) and annotates errors to alert the applicant on how to correctly fix the error. Troubleshoots work and resolves discrepancies as required.
  • Processes and prepares sequences for pre-grant publication and issuance, and performs related quality control.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Possesses a two (2) year Associate degree or relevant experience, four (4) year degree preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is primarily performed in an office environment. Regularly required to sit. Regularly required use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms to handle objects and operate tools, computer, and/or controls. Required to speak and hear. Occasionally required to stand, walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Exposed to general office noise with computers printers and light traffic.
