Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) is seeking a part-time Education and Outreach Specialist to develop outreach activity guides. This is based at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD.

The selected individual will enhance outreach initiatives by developing comprehensive activity guides for existing and new outreach activities and hands-on experiences to effectively communicate satellite mission and data applications to diverse audiences. The position entails creating, organizing, and publishing activity guides on the website to facilitate effective implementation of activities and communication of science and data. Additionally, the role involves promoting these resources throughout the NASA Earth Science community and to relevant agency partners, ensuring wide dissemination and utilization of the developed materials.

The position will require:

  • Research and implement best practices in formal/informal education pedagogy and public engagement practices to develop a framework that will facilitate effective implementation of outreach activities.
  • Develop and refine activity guides based on best practices for existing and new outreach activities and hands-on experiences including activity plans, implementation instructions, background science information, and connections back to NASA science and data.
  • Coordinate with outreach team lead to pilot test select activity guides with internal personnel and partners.
  • Work with the outreach team to create digital materials and downloadable resources required for each activity and post on the website.
  • Organize and categorize activities for ease of access on the website.
  • Promote activities through various NASA channels and social media platforms.
  • Conduct virtual and in-person demonstrations and webinars for NASA mission team leads and education partners.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) and a minimum of 10 years in informal education, formal education, and/or science outreach; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in designing, developing, and implementing public outreach products and programs about Earth science.
  • Experience working with Earth observation satellites, science, and/or data.
  • Strong skills in interpersonal communication and public presentation.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Experience in collaborative efforts, contributing to a team to accomplish science communication or training.
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in a relevant scientific or educational field, or completion of graduate coursework, plus 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of Earth observing satellite technology and operations.
  • Experience in implementing successful training of informal educators or environmental educators relating to the field of Earth science.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
